One event that is a 'must do' for anyone living in London is to go to Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. As I missed out on tickets in the ballot the only way we were going to get in to Wimbledon was to join 'The Queue'. This means that you can get access to the Centre Court, First Court or Second Court if your in the first 3000 people, after that you get entrance to the grounds where you can watch the outer courts and sit up on the hill. Many people actually camp out the night before just to score tickets to the main event but as we had a whole week of camping at Glastonbury and I live just down the road ahead of us Soph and I decided to just try our luck with an early morning start.
We got down there at around 8.30pm and got our queue cards and found out we were 4076th in line. We were a bit worried that we wouldn't get in for aaaaaaaages so we settled down onto the grass, grabbed some coffee and nibblies and had a good chat while we listened to music. When the grounds opened at 10am the queue started moving pretty quickly and we got in at about 11am which we thought was great as it gave us most of the day to explore.
A few of my other friends were in there but were in the middle of watching a game so we decided to watch a game on an outer court. I had no idea who were playing but it was good to be right in the action. I was actually more interested in checking out the ball boys and girls as their job is so INTENSE. After a game we decided to wander around the stadium a bit more.
The whole area was great - as we were there on the first day it wasn't too busy but there was still a bit of a crowd so the atmosphere was buzzing. All the people volunteering and working were looking so smart in their uniforms and they were all so friendly and helpful. We wandered around and checked out the practice courts as our friends had previously seen Nadal warm up on them (but we didn't have too much luck with famous players) before wandering up to the hill to grab some food and Pimm's and watch the big screen. We stayed there for awhile before heading to yet another queue.
This queue was to get tickets for Centre Court as they re-sell them for £5 once people have gone for the day. We had to queue again for a couple of hours but as we were still near the courts we could enjoy some of the day. Lucky for us it was sunny so we had a fun time just sitting on the grass and after a couple of hours were lucky enough to score tickets to Centre Court.
We got on just as Jelena Dokic had finished her first set so we got to see two sets of an Aussie play on Centre Court which was pretty awesome. Halfway through the game the rain poured down so they had to close the roof on the court and we were thankful that we got on so play wasn't interrupted too much. Sadly Jelena lost which was disappointing but the next match on Centre Court was Andy Murray who all the English love. We watched two set's of his before deciding to call it a day.
We had been up really early and the weather was fairly crappy and we basically knew the ending (it was his first match of the tournament of course he was going to win) so we headed home for an early night in in a warm bed. Wimbledon is yet again another awesome event to do in a London summer and one I hope to make a tradition.
